LITERACY ADVOCACY

Ms. Mazzuca provides a certified school librarian for the
Clemente School
community. This service is not available in many other schools. Take advantage of it!

LIBRARY POWER:
Clemente School participates in the SDP Library Power/ Information Technology Program that, examination of our district’s data shows, improves students’ standardized test scores. Library Power is supported fully by our principal, Ms. Pat Mazzuca. The Clemente IMC has open access, flexible scheduling, and is staffed with both a certified school librarian/teacher and bilingual assistant. Library Power in the Clemente IMC provides the services listed below to you and your students.

WHOLE CLASS VISITS (necessary when introducing a new project requiring use of library resources; useful for research projects, book talks or free choice):
You may sign up on the IMC calendar to bring down a class as needed throughout the week. When signing up on the calendar at the circulation desk, please be prepared to collaborate (speak with, determine resources, process and end product) with the librarian concerning your class’s assignment. Any assignment sheets given to the students must be given to the librarian PRIOR to the class visit. Any class visit requires at least 24-hour notice. You stay with your class in the IMC.

HALL PASS VISITS (follow-up to introductory lesson, or for book selection);
Using IMC hall passes, one to four (maximum) students may visit the IMC. Two copies of the official IMC hall pass sheet will be provided to you upon request. Use one immediately, photocopy the second in quantity to use as needed. Fill out the hall pass COMPLETELY, IN INK, including the topic and departure time, so that the students will know when to return to class.
Ý Word processing – 45 minutes
Ý Research – 45 minutes
Ý Free choice – 15 minutes INCLUDING travel time in the hallway
Students do not wait in the IMC to use a computer. They return immediately to class
and may try again later.
Send your own students only for a project that YOU have assigned to them. Do NOT send students because they tell you that they have work to complete for another teacher. When you assign a project, you must make sure that your students can finish the project with the time YOU allot them in the IMC. Plan accordingly.
These limits help students to stay on task in the IMC, decrease hallway travel, increase class time, and provide equity to access of IMC resources.

PLAGIARISM:
When a student returns to your classroom and states that Mrs. Heinsdorf would not allow him/her to print out a project, it is the truth. I have read the student’s work and found it to be plagiarized. I WILL NOT ALLOW PLAGIARIZING.

BOOK TALKS AND FREE CHOICE:
Having signed up your class for a “free choice” book selection, bring them into the IMC and have them SIT DOWN. At this time, make sure that each student who is going to the shelf HAS A SHELF MARKER (available in quantity throughout the IMC). The librarian will assist by giving verbal instructions and highlighting predetermined suggestions. Please watch your students to make sure that each one USES THE SHELF MARKER when selecting a book. This saves the library staff HOURS of time straightening shelves after your class’s brief visit. Thank you for your cooperation.

Make sure that BOOK TALKS are interspersed with free choice so that students see and hear about MANY books available in the IMC.

NO LIBRARY BOOKS GO TO THE LUNCHROOM:
After borrowing books, students may NOT proceed to the lunchroom. Allow sufficient time for the students to
Ý take the books back to the classroom to put the books in their backpacks, or
Ý plan to collect the books yourself. Each student must have a shelf marker with his/her name inserted in each book borrowed, or
Ý students wear their back packs to lunch with the library books inside

EACH STUDENT, INDIVIDUALLY, MUST RETURN TO THE LIBRARY SLOT THOSE ITEMS THAT HE/SHE BORROWED. DO NOT COLLECT BOOKS IN THE CLASSROOM TO SEND TO THE IMC. More books are lost this way than any other. STUDENTS ARE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST BOOKS.

TEACHERS’ BORROWING PRIVILEGES:
Teachers may borrow as many books as needed for classroom use. A teacher’s borrowing period is three (3) weeks. You may renew the collection, unless another teacher has requested the topic. Please keep track of these books. When one disappears (and it’s always the good ones that “disappear,”) it is highly unlikely that it can be replaced.

WHITTLE (CHANNEL ONE):
You may request use of the Whittle system at any time of the day after the Channel One program has aired. The tape aired for you must be educational and written into your lesson plan. Please do not request that inappropriate, pirated, or damaged tapes be aired.
The burden of appropriateness is not to be placed on the library staff who cannot possibly preview requests and don’t know why you have selected the tape. (Don’t ask, “Is it okay to show this one?”) It is up to YOU to select appropriate material (SDP policy is G rated) and preview it. It is collegial courtesy, good professional practice and supports correct copyright usage NOT turn on the TV to amuse your students when another teacher is airing a tape. That teacher may have your students at a later date when those same students will perceive of the program as being “old.”

IMC CLOSED FOR ONE HOUR OF THE WEEK, ONLY:
The only hour of the week that the IMC closes regularly is from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. (On some occasions, students may not be able to access the IMC due to full capacity combined with limited staffing.) For the rare special event placed on the IMC calendar, the IMC may be closed; a sign will be hung on the door noting the time that students may return.
Your respect of the above guidelines allows the IMC staff to serve you and the students fully. Thank you.
