Samples of MLAs (Meaningful Literary Activities) used in Ms. Courain’s classroom with any issue of the magazine Teen People:

1. Look through Teen People magazine. Select a celebrity you would like to write to. Find the celebrity’s address at the website:
http://www.addresses.com/celebrity_email.php
(or use a magazine such as Teen Beat for fan club addresses).
Write the celebrity a letter, using correct form.

2. Choose a contest to enter from pages __________________________.
Read the details of the contest rules in the back of the magazine on pages_______________________ or log on to <http://www.teenpeople.com/win>.

3. Choose an advertisement. Explain how this ad tries to persuade readers to buy this product. Now, create your own advertisement for this same product. Try to do an even better job of convincing your readers to buy this product.

Examples of activities specific to one issue of Teen People (October 2004):

1. USING YOUR OWN PAPER, complete the crossword puzzle, “Hollywood Hunk” on page __________________________________ at the back of the magazine.

2. Read the “Debate Club” article on gay marriage. Now, write your own pro or con position response (must be one page). Use arguments from both sides to support your position.

3. Read “Nelly’s High School Confessions,” on page 70. Create a list of 10 additional questions you would like to ask Nelly.
