Practical Techniques for Using Recorded Books

Equipment needed:
Special, comfortable location
Tape player (individual or with listening center)
Tape at student's/students' comfort reading level for SDP Core Curriculum independent reading

Selection of tape to support Core Curriculum independent reading:
Emergent/primer/easy/below basic--Scholastic tapes with books
Basic--Recorded Book smart readers (reading booklet is included)
Proficient/advanced--Recorded Books with books

Generate interest in title(s) selected:
Select a few specific titles.
"Book talk" each book--give idea about plot, characters, setting, conflict.
Read selected, short excerpt.

Techniques for helping students follow words on the page:
Model reading and following words on the page.
For emergent readers, model using finger or a "way-cool" slider.

After reading:
Talk about what was read.
Write about what was read. (Use PSSA-style assessment questions from the Core Curriculum as prompts.)

Mrs. Enriquez-Beitler's suggestions for English language learners:
Introduce the book.
Listen to the recording first. Then listen again, reading the text (maybe the following year!).
Time the reading to perhaps 2 chapters at a time.
After reading, talk about what was read.
