PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES:
* American Association of School Librarians national conference, Exploratorium
(Best Practices) October 2005, Pittsburgh, PA. Librarian presented the bilingual
reading incentive program that she created, available for viewing at http://libraries.phila.k12.pa.us/clemente/contest.html.
* A POWER Library Tutorial created by a seventh grade student in 2004-2005
as part of the GenY Program was introduced to teachers in a September 2005 professional
development session. This project may be viewed at http://libraries.phila.k12.pa.us/clemente/power.html.
* Librarian facilitated the SDP professional development Miniversity day
at Clemente School, 3/06. 7 speakers and 2 different computer lab programs were
accommodated.
* Professional development for the librarian included a ProQuest professional
development workshop.
* Librarian attended the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association conference
in Hershey, PA.
* Librarian took the American Meteorological Society's Datastreme Oceans
course to better understand the needs of students learning about oceans.
* Development of three new web pages: this one,Tohickon visit web page, reeferenced
below, and a tribute to Ms. Mazzuca's twelve years as principal at Clemente

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES:
* During the first week of student attendance, the librarian visited 50 classrooms
to introduce the school library program.
* Students were taught to bookmark and to use POWER Library. Using turnaround
training, students then taught other students to bookmark the site to gain
easy access to it from any computer in the building.
* URLs in support of teachers classroom lessons were added to the
school library web site http://libraries.phila.k12.pa.us/clemente/teachurl.html.
Students were taught to bookmark this site for easy access to their teachers'
preferred URLs.
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
* Librarian coordinated 2 days of visits to the library and classrooms by Mrs.
Michael Sage, who based her presentation upon Michael Sages compilation
of engaging oral language in The Whimsical Sage.
* Librarian coordinated 5 days of visits to the school library and classrooms
by Mrs. Karletta Poland from the Drexel University Nutrition program.
* Librarian collaborated with the Literacy and Math coaches to write, produce,
and direct 32 public address announcements delivered by 17 students in
support of PSSA testing.
* The librarian was co-coordinator with Mrs. Carol Hamilton, Literacy Specialist,
of a Reading Olympics Program sponsored by the Free Library of Philadelphia.
12 Clemente students participated at Temple University, reading and answering
questions abou t20 books they had read.
SPECIAL EVENTS:
* The BookPals program was continued with students at Tohickon Middle
School, Bucks County. BookPals was created and produced by two ninth grade students
at Tohickon as a community service project to provide participating Clemente
students with up to 6 books to own. The program encourages writing with the
intent of increasing PSSA scores and fostering knowledge of diversity among

BOOK FAIRS AND DISTRIBUTIONS INC. CONTESTS, RAFFLES, ETC.:
* A staff raffle was held the first days of school in September to encourage
teachers to visit the IMC and sign up for library accounts.
* 3 reading incentive contests@ your library/@ su biblioteca were held: Million
$ Pony Contest/Concurso Millonario de el Caballito; Bear Hug Contest/Concurso
del Apretujon; and the Big Pig ContestConcurso de Cerdo Grande. More information

* At least 700 books were selected by contest winners from the Prize Book
Cart to help build home libraries.
* Book fairs were held in November and April, including Teacher Previews
with coffee and pastry. The April book fair was a BOGOF, "Buy One Get One
Free" to encourage students to build home libraries. Each book fair included
a raffle to stimulate purchase of reading books.
STAFFING:
* Additional staffing includes one part-time, bilingual aide, Ms. Migdalia
Torres.
* 20 students were trained as Library Aides to help behind the circulation
desk and assist at the book fairs and during end-of-the-year inventory. They
were treated to a winter social activity and an end-of-the-year social activity
and were given books of their choice from the book fairs and the Prize Book
Cart.
COLLECTION:
* The collection includes over 23,000 current items (average copyright date
of 1994) in support of both the curriculum and pleasure reading.
* 1500 books were added to the collection this year.
* The latest circulation policy allows students to borrow one hardback and one
paperback book, or four paperback books, at one time.
CERTIFIED LIBRARIAN:
Librarian is a member of American Library Association, Pennsylvania School Librarians'
Association and Association of Philadelphia School Librarians (APSL). She has
been elected to the board of the Association of Philadelphia School Librarians
for the 2006-2007 school year.
